May 6, 1994: A former Arkansas state employee files suit against President Clinton, alleging he sexually harassed her in 1991

Today in Legal History

Arkansas state employee Paula Jones sued President Clinton in 1991 for sexual harassment, alleging he propositioned her while he was governor of Arkansas. Because Jones was unable to show damages during the trial, the court dismissed her lawsuit. While the suit was on appeal, Clinton and Jones settled the case Nov. 13, 1998, for $850,000.

In 1999, Clinton was ordered to pay Jones another $91,000 after a judge found him in civil contempt of court for misleading testimony in the original trial. In 2001, Clinton's conduct was reported to the Arkansas Bar Association for disciplinary action, and his law license was suspended for five years.
