May 12, 2002: President Carter visits Fidel Castro

Today in Legal History

President Carter arrived in Cuba on May 12, 2002, to meet with Fidel Castro and address the Cuban public on national television. Carter was the first president, in or out of office, to visit the island since the Cuban revolution of 1959. He was criticized two years before the visit for his relationship with Castro when the two were seen socializing and shaking hands at the funeral of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. After leaving office, he founded an institute to promote global health, democracy and human rights. He has traveled extensively to monitor international elections, conduct peace negotiations and establish relief efforts.
