Agricultural Law

Agricultural Law and policy encompasses plants, animals, land use and use of food products. In the United States, policy regarding agriculture, farming and food is made and executed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). President Abraham Lincoln founded the USDA in 1862, during a time when the United States was a largely agrarian society, in need of support and information to yield better crops. Since then, society has become less agrarian, but the USDA has grown, in part due to the various programs run by the USDA, to support the many areas of food and agriculture. The USDA has evolved into a powerful Federal Executive Department, overseeing issues of agriculture as well as natural resources, nutrition, rural development, food safety and more.
