Nursing Home Abuse
The decision to put an elderly family member into a nursing home is a difficult decision to make. Many times, a family cannot provide the proper care that an elder family member requires. Turning to a nursing home often presents the opportunity for a family to give more appropriate care to a loved one.
Unfortunately, nursing homes do not always provide the care that is expected, resulting in abuse that not only affects an elderly victim, but also the extended family that has placed trust in the facility. In many cases, an elderly family member’s physical and emotional well being and even life is compromised.
Some situations that would constitute nursing home abuse include:
- Overmedication of patients (medication errors)
- Residents receiving insufficient food or water
- Physical or emotional abuse
- Resident’s medical and hygienic needs are neglected
In many cases a victim of nursing home neglect is unable to express to a family member the abuse that he or she is subject to. Residents often enter a nursing home in sensitive physical or mental states, making them easily manipulated and vulnerable to acts of abuse.
Nursing home abuse may be a result of several different factors including improper pre-screening of facility employees, or poor staff evaluation. Regardless of the cause, you or a loved one’s mental and physical well-being is being compensated.
