Truck Accidents

Accidents involving large trucks tend to be many times more destructive and deadly than those involving only smaller vehicles. Numerous safety procedures and government organizations set guidelines to help prevent such accidents from happening. When those guidelines are not closely followed there can be catastrophic results. Commercial Trucking companies are required to carry large insurance policies in order to satisfy financial liability if such an accident should occur.

Dangers:

  • Large trucks have a tendency to tip over during an impact.
  • Truck drivers have much less visibility due to the size of the vehicle. As a result large trucks sometimes turn into smaller vehicles while are traveling in a “blind spot”
  • The weight of 18 wheelers makes them much less maneuverable than smaller vehicles. Especially stopping distances. Big trucks require at least 40 percent more space to stop.
  • Smaller vehicles can sometimes be squeezed by larger trucks making wide right hand turns, sometimes resulting in serious accidents.
  • Many truck drivers are required to put in long hours, which make them susceptible to fatigue.

Causes:

  • Failure to adequately perform safety checks
  • Following too close behind other vehicles
  • Driver Fatigue
  • Driving while using a cell phone
  • Intoxication
  • Jackknifing
  • Speeding

Statistics :

  • Over 500,000 Truck Accidents occur each year
  • Approximately 5,000 people die from trucking accidents
  • Approximately 100,000 people are injured in accidents involving large trucks
  • A fully loaded 18 wheeler can weigh more than 80,000 pounds.
  • More than 2,000 trucks carrying hazardous materials are involved in crashes each Year
  • More than 75,000 trucks are involved in tow away accidents each year
