Case Management Software
When it’s time to purchase case management software, many law firms are hesitant to make a commitment because of a previous technology experience that turned out badly. It’s a very big decision, a stressful situation. Everyone is depending on you to make the right decision. Everyone - not just you, but all the staff and attorneys in the office are going to have to make a commitment to learn and use the software. It’s very important for you to pick not only the right case management software, but the right company as well.
Case management is a vexing and often chaotic problem for law firms and law departments. Locating and retrieving precedent and model documents, tracking redlined, comment and revised versions, tying related documents together into case, transaction or matter groups, and organizing correspondence, memos, and e-mails can require large expenditures of time, effort and attention.
A law firm or law department’s ability to keep control of current and file documents is critical to a successful law practice. How well it manages it’s prior work product it’s most important tangible intellectual asset is critical to it’s efficiency, it’s ability to manage its knowledge resources effectively, and ultimately its ability to compete. There is no one-size-fits-all solution the tools range from increasingly powerful features included in office suites to very powerful but complex specialized document management software. Specialized electronic document management systems impose a significant cost in resources, time and complexity, but less complex processes and tools options may not fit the bill.
What to Do?
Gather information on several case management software programs by reading legal technology publications and visiting exhibitions at legal conferences. Request demonstrations of case management software programs. Narrow the field to three or four software programs that met the needs of the law offices. Make sure that the company is going to be around five years from now. I wanted to meet more than just one sales person. I wanted to meet and get to know the people behind the company. The people you talk to should be straightforward and honest, and you should enjoy dealing with them. We suggest that you set up criteria of what you want your software to do. Then, narrow down the field to those products that meet your criteria. Make your decision based on the research that you have done on the product, but don’t forget to evaluate the company and the people behind it
