An increasing number of courts are now moving to electronic court document filing. In the United States more than 20 courts have gone completely paperless, only accepting cases filed over the internet. With national standards being adopted, companies now offer court filing at a fraction of the cost of paper filing. Using existing e-commerce technology, these companies can prepare and file cases as well as retrieve case information, often times the same day.
Nationwide implementation of case management and electronic case files (CM/EFC) will replace old docketing and case management systems in Federal Bankruptcy Courts. CM/EFC is now being used in 91 district courts, 293 bankruptcy courts, Court of International Trade and the Court of Federal Claims. This transformation has allowed 27 million cases to be filed electronically with more than 250,000 attorneys filing online.
